Community Education

Breast Self Examination - Early Detection Program
This program instructs women about breast tissue and the proper techniques for self-examination. It is designed to increase women’s knowledge as well as a sense of confidence and control. The presentation includes lecture, video and hands-on practice using breast models. An opportunity to ask questions and address concerns is also a part of the program. There is no disrobing. Classes are offered at the Cordelia Knott Center for Wellness, as well as at organizations and businesses throughout the community. For additional information call Jan West, R.N. at 714-731-0233

Pearls of Wisdom
This program emphasizes the 3-Step Plan for early detection and the importance of following its guidelines. The plan is reinforced by the emotional impact of the women who have contributed their personal stories. Video presentations of survivors describe their diagnosis and experience with breast cancer. Pearls, representing the size of a curable breast cancer, are available to participants to wear on pink ribbons - a reminder to carry our early detection message to other women. This program is popular in a "lunch and learn" format which is easily completed in 30 to 45 minutes. Please call Jan West, R.N. at 714-731-0233 to schedule this program.

Women at Risk
This program is designed to explain how Lymphedema develops, to help women understand and recognize the symptoms and to encourage them to seek treatment early. At the time of diagnosis a woman is overwhelmed with the need to understand options and to make appropriate decisions relating to her breast and her life. Many women are unaware at this critical time about the prospect of developing arm swelling (Lymphedema). Following axillary node dissection and/or radiation therapy all patients are at risk for developing Lymphedema. The onset could occur within weeks, months or many years following treatment, thus it is described as a lifetime risk. Please call Jan West, R.N. at 714-731-0233 to schedule this program.
